Ape Escape: On the Loose, a remake of the original game was released globally as one of the launch games for the PlayStation Portable. Ape Escape: Pumped & Primed was released in Japan through Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. In 2003, SCEI worked on a multiplayer party game and the sequel to Piposaru 2001. The next year, Ape Escape 2 was developed by Sony and published in Japan in 2002 and in Europe and North America in 2003. It is the first game in the series to have been developed for PlayStation 2. It was reviewed positively, and was compared to games such as Super Mario 64. The game was a success, going Platinum, entering the Greatest Hits series in the US, and entered the "Best Of" releases in Japan. In 1998, the game was developed under the name Sarugetchu, and would be the first game to explicitly require the DualShock controller. That's right, Kakeru, Natsumi, Hakase and the like fight in real locations throughout Tokyo. The game has all the humor you've come to expect from the series, with the zany monkey antics made all the more fun due to a real setting. If you don't take the game too seriously, though, Ape Escape packs some laughs. Combine this inconsistency with the total lack of camera control, and combat can be sloppy. The laser gun and roller blades are controlled exclusively with the face buttons, making for a somewhat confusing mix. This is actually true only for some weapons, like the sword and net. The face buttons are used to switch between weapons, with the right analogue stick used to attack. The control is classic Ape Escape, for better or worse.
